Pediatric neurosurgery and treatment of brain tumors
My group has 6 board-certified pediatric neurosurgeons, all skilled with brain tumor surgery in children.
We unfortunately tend to meet children and families when the unthinkable happens: at discovery of a brain mass in a child, and considering and planning its safe approach and removal. Careful decision making is important at this time - as important as good surgery. We do that with the same care and meticulousness we would want for our own loved ones.
It is important to keep in mind that coordinated care in the whole spectrum and journey of brain tumor treatment is vital.
Lurie Children's Hospital has the resources in place to diagnose, treat, and support patients and families every step of the way.
Many physicians at Lurie Children’s Hospital and Cancer Center contribute to the care of a child with a brain tumor. Our neurosurgery group, as well as medical and radiation oncologists, neuroradiologists, neuropathologists and neurologists discuss the case of each patient with a new diagnosis of brain tumor every Wednesday at the multidisciplinary neurooncology conference. Reviewing cases together with so many specialists ensures that we consider and provide the most appropriate care for each child.
The Lurie Children’s Hospital Cancer Center and Brain Tumor Program provides cutting-edge treatment for children with all types and stages of brain tumors. The Brain Tumor Program develops and participates in national and international research studies and clinical trials, providing patients with opportunities for the latest and most innovative therapies. TCH is a founding member and one of the 10 sites of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium (PBTC). In addition, TCH is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) with access to innovative experimental protocols through the COG Phase I Consortium.
Nurse practitioners, nurses, physical/occupational/speech therapists, physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, neuropsychologists, neurologists, endocrinologists, ophthalmologists, social workers and others work closely with the neurosurgeons and oncologists as a coordinated team so that all aspects of care for children and their families are addressed.
The Brain Tumor Program continues with a Long Term Survivor Program, which is staffed by experienced physicians who continue to monitor children treated for brain tumors long after the treatments were completed.
