Head injury and concussions

It is important to create a culture of partnership and communication with youth, parents, teachers, coaches, and doctors in the context of families, schools, recreation, and organized sports. Professional sports teams have rules for returning to competitive play after concussions. Our youth are still growing and developing, so it is important we provide children with special care. Sports concussions in youth are a big focus at TCH, with specialists monitoring recovery, avoiding more injury, and determining appropriate timing of return to school and return to sports play. While not every child with a concussion is an athlete, every child is a student. We are attuned to the needs of growing children, and can help to get them back on track safely with return to learning, school, sports, and other activities.
Read my blog entry on youth concussions here.

Follow up for traumatic brain injury and concussions is essential. Neurosurgery and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialists, in partnership with a team of other physicians, therapists, and social workers help children with Traumatic Brain Injury on the road to recovery and back to their daily lives.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) HEADS UP program promotes youth and athlete safety. HEADS UP provides information about preventing, recognizing, and responding to concussions and head injury. The following HEADS UP content is supplied with permission by the CDC.
